Dear Friends,

We are aware that Governor Inslee has issued statements regarding the lifting of mask mandates for Washington state. We would like to take a moment to update the community on our plans throughout this process. As you may or may not know, our shelter has been closed to the public for a few months now. We are currently operating by appointment only and taking care of as much business as possible via our walk-up window as well as by phone and email. We have done this not only out of an abundance of caution due to COVID variants, but also because of serious staffing shortages. HSSV, like the rest of the world, is experiencing challenges with staff levels due to staff illness and a general lack of availability of employees.

Additionally, we understand that we are not out entirely of the woods yet with regard to COVID. So, we will continue to operate in the same manner – by appointment and via phone and email – for the immediate future, even past March 21st, the date the mandates are no longer in place. This is necessary due to a lack of adequate staffing levels to safely reopen fully.

Masks will be optional for those visiting the shelter for their appointments AFTER the mandate has been lifted next month. If you choose to continue to wear your mask or not after the 21st of March, it is up to you. We ask that you allow others the same courtesy in making their own choice and continue to be safe and vigilant. Masks will continue to be required until the indoor mandate is lifted. We ask you that you continue to be cooperative and patient with us as we navigate these difficult times for us all. We very much appreciate your understanding.

If you have any questions about these policies and procedures, please email us at  and we’ll be happy to help.

With gratitude,
Janine Ceja
