Many Ways To Help
There are many ways to get involved and help the pets at the Humane Society of Skagit Valley. We rely on volunteers to help the animals in our care receive adequate attention, affection, exercise, care, and love.
We need foster homes for our most young and fragile pets, and our bigger pets require regular help in learning their manners so that they too can find homes. There are so many ways to help.
We also rely on our members and donors to provide the products and cash that it takes to keep the animals fed, sheltered, and medically attended.
Beside donations, much of our funding comes from our annual fundraisers. We can use reliable volunteers to help with these events. We are continually running or planning events, so give us a call or send an email if you want more information of our upcoming events.
(It is a common misunderstanding in the community that we are a county funded shelter. We do have stray animal boarding contracts with Skagit county and with a number of cities in both Skagit and Snohomish counties, but we are a private non-profit organization that relies on donations, fundraising, and profits from the sales at our thrift shop to keep our doors open.)
Shop At Our Thrift Shop
The Humane Society Thrift Shop in Mount Vernon, Washington is our primary means of fundraising for the animal shelter. Shopping at our thrift shop is a win/win opportunity: you get cool second hand duds, and we get the money that we need to continue our life-saving program. The thrift shop also has select friendly felines available for adoption. You can visit the shop at 525 E College Way, Mt Vernon, WA 98273
Attend Our Fundraising Events
Throughout the year, the Humane Society of Skagit Valley(HSSV), Sponsors and Individuals around Skagit County host a variety of fundraising events throughout the year to help raise awareness and funding for HSSV. If you are interested in attending one of these events visit our Events page for more event information and scheduling.

Foster ~ Saving the lives of kittens and puppies
We are incredibly grateful to the foster families who help us give dogs with puppies, cats with kittens, and orphaned youngsters the best possible environment during their formative weeks.
The Humane Society is often in need of good foster homes to provide care for young kittens or puppies until they are old enough to be adoptable. This can require up to a two month commitment. Foster homes need to have an area where they can isolate their own pets from the foster pets. If you are interested and are a responsible pet lover, please email janine.c@skagithumane.org. I will send you some information, but I truly encourage you to stop by the Humane Society to fill out an application. We need as many Foster Parents on standby so when the need arises, we call upon you. Please let us know what you are willing to foster, as our program can be as little as 4 weeks or up to 14 weeks. It all depends on the need.
Give a mature pet a better chance
You may also choose to foster any of our other animals in the shelter. This helps free up room at the shelter so that we may take in other needy animals. It also helps dogs and cats by taking them out of the stressful shelter environment and helps to acclimate them to a home environment which makes them more adoptable. This is a unique request as the Humane Society is open 7 days a week, the need for a foster of this kind of pet requires flexibility to be available to do meet and greets.
