Ch-ch-changes are in the Works!
Construction was finalized on our current facility in 2006. It is an aging shelter, and as a result, has experienced some structural damage due to heavy rains, increased demand for our services and just general wear and tear. We have had to dip into our funding to repair the roof and a few walls, as well as repaint the exterior, to prevent further damage and avoid any interruptions in service. The roof had a leak that damaged not only the roof, but several walls as well. This also caused damage to the outside siding. The repairs and improvements we are making will serve to firm up our facility and enable us to spend many more years serving animals and their families at our current location.
The repairs are necessary but were unexpected. We are further seeking to improve our internal infrastructure by updating our phones, server and computing equipment. We must update our shelter server and improve our security measures by updating existing internal wiring and equipment.
Unfortunately, due to COVID, we have had to revert some funding from animal care to PPE for shelter staff and volunteers, as well as installing plexiglass shields, purchasing sanitation supplies and thermometers, and so on. We have also had the need to limit the number of community members who can enter the facility at one time, meaning that one of our vital sources of revenue is down. These two unexpected issues have resulted in a shortage of funds for other needs, such as urgent animal care and our low-income spay and neuter clinic – as well as our supply of pet food and medical supplies, immunizations, flea treatments and other vital animal needs.
Your financial support for the necessary repairs and improvements will help us to redirect other funds back to our primary mission of humane animal advocacy and care.
